A psychiatric evaluation is like a check-up for your brain and feelings. Just like you go to a doctor for a regular physical exam to make sure your body is healthy, a psychiatric evaluation (sometimes called a psych eval) is a special kind of check-up for your mind and emotions. A trained practitioner talks with you to understand how you’re thinking, feeling, and acting.

Why Would Someone Get One?

People get psychiatric evaluations for many normal reasons, such as:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, anxiety, irritability, or mood swings that interfere with everyday activitiesDifficulty concentrating, staying organized, or managing tasks at work or homeTrouble sleeping, changes in appetite, low energy, or unexplained physical symptoms that may be linked to mental healthExperiencing trauma, flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive thoughts after difficult life eventsChallenges in relationships — such as frequent conflicts with a partner, family members, or colleaguesStruggling with work performance, motivation, burnout, or feeling overwhelmed by responsibilitiesUsing alcohol, substances, or other behaviors to cope with stress in ways that create problemsGrief, major life transitions (divorce, job loss, retirement, parenting challenges), or ongoing stress that feels unmanageableConcerns about memory, thinking clearly, or changes in personality noticed by themselves or others

It’s not because someone is “bad” or “crazy.” It’s because they want to feel better and need expert help.

What Happens During the Evaluation?

The evaluation usually includes:

  1. Talking – The provider asks questions about your life, school, friends, family, sleep, eating habits, and what makes you happy or upset. You can answer honestly — they’ve heard it all before!
  2. Listening – You get to share your own story. Many people say it feels good to talk to someone who understands.
  3. Physical check – They might check your height, weight, or blood pressure because your body and brain are connected.

The whole thing is private.
